You know “those days”. Yup, the ones where you’re loaded: a crying toddler, fussy infant, greasy hair, and spit up on your shoulder. Today was certainly one of those days, but I’ll tell you what, it was also magic in the mundane.
We made cake today. It was exceptional, I have to admit. It’s incredible to watch ingredients like coconut flour, honey, cinnamon, flakes of coconut, whipped cream frosting, and more come together into sticky perfection. As I was mixing away, my two-year-old licking the whisk beaters, this song came on, and it struck me as perfect.

Big Love in the Small Moments
Somebody was telling me recently of a young boy who allowed himself to be mauled by a dog in order to protect his little sister. She was in harm’s way, and he stepped in front of her, receiving the bites meant for her. Considering that story, I vocalized my question, how do we raise little men as brave as that?
Even as I asked the question, I realized the answer. I am not to focus on raising brave little boys, although, that can be beneficial. Instead, I am to focus on raising little boys that love ferociously! Because it’s not courage that inspires little boys to step into harm’s way, it’s love. Big love in the small moments equips small boys with enough love to move them to action.
Everything is Sacred When You Take Time to Notice
How do we create big love in the small moments? I believe it’s by realizing that everything is truly sacred when you take the time to notice. No moment is wasted. Every sacrifice is worth it. “Those days” matter. Amazingly, you get to play a HUGE part in choosing whether those days are defined as “good” or “bad”.
Do you take the time to love, with a gentle word, laughter, soft tears, humility, kindness, gratitude, praise, and patience on “those days”? Or are those days lost on you? I’d like to say I’m really good at turning those days into magic. Unfortunately, I’m not. The majority of the time, I lose on those days, but to be honest, even recognizing that is a win! Making magic in the mundane takes a lot of work, a lot of energy, and a lot of sacrifice, but every time I accept that challenge, I’m amazed at the results. Furthermore, I’m thrilled at the fruit that I get to see in my two little shadows, every time I recognize a challenging situation as a blessing.
So, go ahead and do it! I believe in you. Go make magic in your mundane. It’ll be worth it. I promise!
