It’s tough having little kiddos during cold and flu season. Somehow, they seem to have a special knack of picking colds up right and left. I’ve got a few tips and tricks that have been very beneficial for my children during their colds, but before, I begin, I am going to add a little disclaimer. 🙂 I am not a doctor, nurse, or medical advisor. These are simply home remedies that have been passed down and super beneficial. 🙂
Kiddos
Especially when they’re little, I feel like kiddos have a habit of picking up those colds. They don’t have the wherewithal and knowhow to avoid some of the most obvious pitfalls. For example, washing their hands, blowing their noses in toilet paper, not sharing germs, etc. I don’t know about you, but my almost three-year-old has this stellar habit of kissing his sister, and the kisses seem to increase in abundance when he’s feeling a little low. Perhaps it’s his comfort mechanism, but it’s a little threatening, considering that his slobbery kisses and runny nose get smeared all across her face. And before I know it, “Vwa-lla” little girl is sick too.
Luckily, these few tips and tricks have been super beneficial for us with mitigating disaster during cold season.
Kids and Colds Tips and Tricks
First, I’ve been teaching my son that he’s only allowed to pick his nose in the bathroom. Funny thought, I know, but it’s actually really helpful. He’s little and remarkably curious, and a “no picking the nose” policy seems a bit harsh and rather challenging to implement. However, having an area where he can do it, seems to help isolate the germs into one area. It’s also a conveniently located room right next to the sink and washstand. Habits are best implemented when they’re easy, and having the sink right there makes it fun and easy for him to wash his hands.
Second, my son loves vitamins! If I’m taking them, he wants to take them too. In fact, I just heard him ask Gramma for her “Vi-amin Zinc” the other day. Obviously, having adult vitamins in adult doses is rather out of the question even if he does have a cold.
I do find that opening up my vitamin capsules and sprinkling a very minimal portion on his food makes him feel important and excited! Not enough to cause issues, but enough that it boosts his system just a touch. Mostly though, I’m proactively encouraging his love of vitamins so that he can happily enjoy taking child gummy vitamins that properly boost his system!
Lastly, I’ve been teaching him that his little sister loves his kisses and snuggles, but when he has a runny nose, her face is off limits. He can kiss her toes and legs, but kisses on the cheek are reserved for healthy times! This one has been tricky, but he’s connecting the dots!

Lastly, don’t forget that NAPS are a kid’s best friend when they’re sick! Snuggles, cuddles, and long naps make the grumpiest kids the happiest!
